Mit Spaß und Kreativität gegen Plastikmüll

Plastic Fisherman

Lasst Euch inspirieren…

A Letter from the Fisherman

Hello everybody,

my name is Rodrigo Butori, for me, the ocean has always been an integral part of my life. I surf, dive, and have always chosen to live in coastal cities to stay close to the sea. The saltwater soothes and nourishes my soul.

One morning in 2019, I was blown away by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s statement that by 2050, there could be more plastic than fish by weight in our oceans. This revelation was a wake-up call. Having received so much from the ocean, I felt a moral obligation to give back, using my creativity, communication, and design strengths.

Thus, @Plasticfisherman was born: a personal initiative on Instagram that evolved into a global movement with over 10,000 plastic fish “caught” in 94 countries and ambassadors in Germany, Brazil, the UK, the Bahamas, Uruguay, Mauritius, Spain, and Japan.

At Plastic Fisherman, we harness the power of creativity, art, and community engagement to raise awareness about the dangers of marine plastic pollution and inspire positive action. We’ve transformed beach cleanups into what I named ‘plastic fishing’ – a fun, accessible activity that empowers anyone to become a plastic fisherman.

And that's how it works...

1. Pick up five or more pieces of plastic polluting the beach.

2. Use them to make a fish 🐟.

3. Take a picture 📸 of your catch.

4. Share it using #plasticfishing.

5. Clean it all up and dispose it 🗑 properly.

The plastic Fisherman

Today, Plastic Fisherman functions as an educational organization, hosting events like our Plastic Fishing Festivals, pioneering recycling initiatives like the upcoming Plastic Fisherman Workshop, and developing educational resources such as the ‘Litter At Sea’ lesson plans.

We’ve collaborated with municipalities, schools, and businesses keen on supporting the cause, educating communities, tourists, students, employees, and customers about this critical issue and effective mitigation strategies.

Join us. Let’s go plastic fishing!

All the best, Rodrigo
